Cards from the Wild Unknown tarot

The moon is waxing again and this week’s reading speaks of growth and looking outward. We are urged to spend time envisioning the future we want and how we plan to put our will into action to achieve it. Nothing too unusual about that, you might say: it’s how we make progress all the time. And that’s true, but we don’t always take time to stop and look around, review, think about where we’re at, remind ourselves of what skills we’ve used to get there.

Often, that’s because we get ourselves clogged up in other things – the demands society places on us, the less healthy habits and materialistic urges to compete that can hold us back and take our eyes off the real prize. This reading says that the start of the new month is a good moment for reflection on the negativity or unhealthy attachments we might be contending with. If we find that they’re standing in our way, it’s time to place our own will firmly back at the centre of our plans.

Cards from the Alchemical tarot

This week sees a new moon and this reading feels very like a time of contemplation and consolidation is due in the days leading up to it.

This King speaks of filling our cup from within: emotional fulfilment has to begin with the self. When we lack in this area it’s tempting to turn inwards in less helpful ways, becoming insular and disinclined to share of ourselves and our resources. This, however, will leave us ultimately stuck, unable to move for fear of shattering the fragile status quo but all too aware of the load we’re bearing.

If we are able to spend some time this week considering our needs, and whether the way we relate to the external world feeds or frustrates them, we should find any clarity on this issue stands us in good stead for the new moon.

Cards from the Thoth tarot

You’ve heard the old aphorism about all work and no play making Jack a dull boy? We’re not quite in that territory this week, but not so far away.

The thing about work is: consistency and steady effort are definitely good things. Honing a craft, practising, allowing a thing to bloom in its own time are important skills. But sometimes, in order for a nascent bud to burst into flower, we need to make a leap of faith. We must accept that while outcomes are not always guaranteed, much less clear to us in advance, in order to get to the end result we occasionally have to just… close our eyes and dive in. To dream, to fantasise a little, and take the chance that those flights of fantasy may in reality end up sailing us closer to the thing we have in mind.

So – this week, don’t give up on the steady progress you’ve made, but think about how it might be enhanced by a little unscheduled play. Listen to the daydreams that are whispering “what if…?” You might find they have something to say.

Tarot for the week ahead, 10.7.22

Cards from the Zillich tarot

This week we are invited to consider passion. In both the Queen and the Prince their passionate personalities manifest as dynamism, magnetism even. But where there is such power at work, there may also come recklessness or stubbornness with the fire of the Queen, and with the Prince, inexperience – even clumsiness – in the exercise of love, sometimes leading to a failure to temper his aggression.

So, we are looking at situations where strong feelings of whatever variety have the potential to become heated – and the resulting fireworks could be beautiful, but they might equally burn everything down if poorly handled. What the High Priestess tells us about this is twofold. First, that some things are not for us to see: we cannot predict all outcomes where passion is concerned. Second, we would do well to pay attention to our intuition in order to navigate the way this week. Take care to pause and listen to that inner voice before the touchpaper is lit.

Cards from the Field tarot

Quite the contrast to the last reading!

This week offers some ease and an opportunity both for exploration and enjoyment. If you have any significant milestones coming up – mark them well. You’ve come a long way these last couple of years, and you’re still here. Think about what you’d like to look forward to next. The Sun says there’s every chance of getting it, if you start to work towards it now. That’s got to be worth celebrating, hasn’t it?

Cards from the Crow tarot

Ouch. After an extremely challenging few days of global news, this reading shouldn’t really come as a surprise I guess.

These cards speak of a new phase ushered in by conflict and cataclysmic events. We don’t yet know the full ramifications of these events, but while it would be a grave mistake to underplay their seriousness, it’s worth our remembering one of the lessons of the Tower that people sometimes overlook: it can be rebuilt. There is significant damage, yes, but the structure still stands and the foundations remain. This week, faced with the aftermath, let’s remember that.

Cards from the Spacious Tarot

Some weeks the message is really simple and clear.

If you feel confused and confounded by too much choice or too many possible paths to take; if you are feeling all over the place or conversely, have ground to a halt, finding yourself stuck in procrastination; and if all this is causing you pain and distress; the way out of the cycle is through reconnection with your instinctive, creative self. You know what excites you, what you truly connect with, deep within you. You know what to do. Remind yourself of that. Trust it. Step forward.

Cards from the Dark Wood tarot

We have a full moon coming up on Tuesday this week: always something of a watershed moment. These cards speak of personal agency and responsibility as a key theme for the surrounding days.

We can, sometimes, be our own worst enemies. We convince ourselves that we are stuck, unable to free ourselves from tricky situations or relationships. We tell ourselves that our problems are intractable, far too large to begin to tackle. Maybe at times we even thrive on the drama of it all, whether or not we like to admit it to ourselves or anyone else.

We assign too much weight to external factors, telling ourselves that we are the passive victims of circumstance and fate. The wheel turns, and either we decide that all that we can do is accept whatever comes around with it; or, sometimes, we tell ourselves that what’s coming around the corner will fix everything, will finally be the opportunity we’ve been waiting for or the answer to our difficulties. So, of course, we do nothing while we wait for this magical moment to arrive. The present is lost to us as a consequence.

The answer to helping us move away from being the passive observers of our own lives is knowledge – specifically, self-knowledge. This week, examine your belief systems about your life and whether they serve you. Are you living the life you want, or the one you think others expect of you? Have you learnt to view your own capabilities through the lens of others, or from your own experiences? Think about what might happen if you saw your life from a different perspective. How might things change if you did? What might you regain control of? Knowledge is power.

Cards from the Alchemical tarot

Two sixes this week: cards intimately connected with giving (how we share the things we have) and receiving (how we are recognised for our skills and successes). Before them, the King of Swords: ruler of confidence, clear thinking and communication.

The message: think carefully about how you interact with others in the coming days, and what you want from those interactions. Be open and straightforward in your dealings with people. Treat them as you would wish to be treated. It will bring its own rewards.

Cards from the Wild Unknown tarot

A nice bit of continuity from last week in the shape of the Two of Pentacles. Change is the only constant, right? It’s definitely on its way, and the Sun says it’s the positive kind. There’s no guarantee it will come without any pain – emotional knots aren’t so easily untangled – but with the Sun’s warmth front and centre we are encouraged to look for the good things emerging this week, the one that will help that tangle begin to loosen.
